- Lionsgate has officially greenlit a sequel to *The Housemaid*, titled *The Housemaid's Secret.*
- The upcoming film is based on Freida McFadden's 2022 novel of the same name.
- Sydney Sweeney and Michele Morrone are expected to return as Millie and Enzo respectively.
Despite going up against *Avatar: Fire and Ash*, Paul Feig's erotic thriller *The Housemaid *has become a hit with critics and at the box office. Naturally, this has sparked chatter about a potential sequel.
The 2025 film is based on Freida McFadden's 2022 bestselling novel, which launched a trilogy. McFadden has since released *The Housemaid's Secret* (2023) and *The Housemaid Is Watching* (2024), giving filmmakers plenty of material to continue Millie's (Sydney Sweeney) story on the big screen.
*The Housemaid *also hints at what's next. After helping her former employer Nina Winchester (Amanda Seyfried) escape her sadistic husband Andrew (Brandon Sklenar), Millie is set up with a potential new household. But the woman she meets has some bruises on her arms, and even fiddles with a knife, making it clear that, once again, Millie's job involves much more than just cooking and cleaning.
So, is a sequel actually happening? Here's everything we know so far about *The Housemaid's Secret*, from the plot to the cast and more.
Will there be a *The Housemaid *sequel?

Good news for fans of *The Housemaid*: a sequel is officially in the works. On Tuesday, January 6, Lionsgate announced the next film in the franchise, *The Housemaid's Secret, * based on the second book in McFadden's bestselling series.
"It's clear from both the global box office and from the outpouring on social media that audiences have responded strongly — and audibly — to the totally unique and truly theatrical experience of *The Housemaid* and want to know what happens next," Lionsgate Motion Picture Group chair Adam Fogelson said in a statement. "*The Housemaid's Secret* is another wildly thrilling book in Freida's series that has captivated readers worldwide, and we look forward to translating it into a similarly rousing and riotous moviegoing experience."

Feig added, "It's been thrilling to see audiences around the world fall in love with *The Housemaid* and the incredible work of our talented cast and crew. We're lucky that Freida McFadden has already extended Millie's journey on the page, and that we get to work with Rebecca Sonnenshine and Lionsgate to bring this next story to audiences."
Before the first film hit theaters, ** asked Sweeney and Seyfried if they would be open to starring in a sequel. "I think that we'll just have to wait and see," Sweeney said. "I hope that the audience loves the movies just like we love the books, and we can continue to hopefully share that love within more of the films."
As for Seyfried, her character Nina completes her arc in the first film, but she's definitely open to returning. "Oh yeah, absolutely [I'd do more films]," she said. "Listen, if it doesn't do well, you can call it off, but if it does, well, it's absolutely a franchise. I didn't sign on for anything but this one because my story ends, but they know that if they make another one, I'll be a part of it, because I had so much fun with Paul [Feig, director]."
What is *The Housemaid’s Secret *about?

Sydney Sweeney as Millie in 'The Housemaid'.
Daniel McFadden/Lionsgate
The official synopsis for *The Housemaid's Secret *adaptation* *hasn't been released yet, but it's expected to follow the same twisty storyline that made McFadden's sequel a massive success. In the novel, Millie lands herself another housemaid job that feels *way *too familiar.
After surviving the nightmare of her last employer, Millie now works for the Garricks. Wendy Garrick is wealthy but unwell, and her husband Douglas is a walking red flag with his cold, controlling behavior. It doesn't take long for Millie to sense that something is very wrong, and that she's walked into yet another dangerous household.
Convinced that Douglas is hiding a dark side, Millie decides to do something about it. The novel teases the lengths she may push herself to: "I've done this before. I can protect Mrs. Garrick while keeping my own secrets locked up safe. Douglas Garrick has done wrong. He is going to pay. It’s simply a question of how far I'm willing to go."
When does *The Housemaid’s Secret *come out?

As of this writing, there is no official release date for *The Housemaid's Secret*. Lionsgate has said they plan to start filming in 2026, so it seems fans shouldn't expect to see it in theaters until around 2027.
It's worth noting that the first *Housemaid *movie filmed pretty quickly; production started in January 2025 and wrapped by March. If *The Housemaid's Secret *follows a similar speedy schedule and begins filming early this year, it could be on track for a potential Christmas 2026 release.
