Pinnock, whose debut solo album is out now, explains the decision to PEOPLE

Leigh-Anne Pinnock is opening up about why she values her twin daughters’ privacy.

The Little Mix member, 34, whose debut solo album My Ego Told Me To is out now, welcomed twin daughters with husband Andre Gray in August 2021, and the couple has chosen not to share their names or faces publicly.

“I remember when they were born, I was going through this online hate thing and really seeing the toxicity of social media,” Pinnock tells PEOPLE. “I mean, I probably would've still decided to not show their faces anyway, but that just kind of confirmed it for me. I want them to be able to make that decision.”

“I want them to be able to [choose] if they want to be famous or not, because once they're out there, they're out there,” she explains. “And I think that's such a big thing.”

Pinnock says she and Gray ultimately chose to hide the girls’ names and faces to “protect them.”

“It's just a f---ing scary place out there,” she adds.

Fans of Pinnock can hear her daughters’ sweet voices at the very end of “Heaven,” the closing track of My Ego Told Me To. “When you're here / This is the closest I've ever, ever been to Heaven / All I need's right here,” she sings on the chorus.

“I cry every time [I listen to that song]. Oh, God, it’s just so special,” says Pinnock. “It's actually my favorite song of all time, to be honest.”

As for why “Heaven” concludes the album, Pinnock explains how it fits into the project’s theme of overcoming hardships in life and the music industry in order to feel empowered.

“It's like, ‘We've gone through this album. We've gone through all the trials and tribulations it took to get this album across the line and all the struggles in this industry, whatever it is,’” she says. “But actually, all of this is to protect my heaven because that's really all that matters.”
