Nick Reiner will not appear in court as expected Tuesday on accusations he murdered his parents, Rob Reiner and Michele Singer Reiner, because he has not been medically cleared yet, his attorney said.
Nick, 32, was scheduled in court Tuesday for the first time after being arrested by the Los Angeles Police Department near the campus of the University of Southern California on Sunday night and taken into custody the following day at 5:04 a.m. He was booked on suspicion of murder on Monday and remains in jail without bail.
Instead, *The New York Times* reports, Nick's attorney, Alan Jackson, told reporters at the courthouse that his client had not been medically cleared to be transferred from the jail to the courthouse and that there will not be a hearing in the case on Tuesday. The outlet added that Jackson, who has represented Harvey Weinstein and Kevin Spacey, did not give any additional details about Nick's planned defense.

Rob, 78, and Michele, 68, — who got married in 1989 after meeting while Rob was directing *When Harry Met Sally* — were discovered on Sunday afternoon by their youngest child, daughter Romy, 27. Per a statement from the LAPD, at approximately 3:40 p.m. police responded to a call of a death investigation and found the deceased, who were identified as the longtime couple.
"As a result of the initial investigation, it was determined that the Reiners were the victims of homicide," the statement read. "The investigation further revealed that Nick Reiner, the 32-year-old son of Robert and Michele Reiner, was responsible for their deaths. Nick Reiner was located and arrested at approximately 9:15 p.m."
The court postponement comes as sources told PEOPLE on Monday that Nick and his father had been involved in a loud heated argument during a holiday party on Saturday night, hosted by Conan O'Brien. The outlet reports that one source recalled Nick "freaking everyone out, acting crazy, kept asking people if they were famous." According to TMZ, the couple left the party following the argument.

The family has publicly discussed Nick's history with drug abuse before; Nick himself was a frequent guest on the *Dopey *podcast, on which host Dave Manheim brings on guests to talk about the ups and downs of addiction and recovery.
In a 2018 episode, Nick detailed a nightmarish experience relapsing into heroin use. But on a stimulant like cocaine, he explained, "you're crazy," and there's "no logic" to your decisions.
He also described the outburst he had in reaction to being told by his parents he had to vacate the guesthouse they'd allowed him to live in.
"It's not much of a story," Nick said, adding that he no longer remembered "the specifics of it."
But in response to several follow-ups from Manheim, Nick detailed, "I went 10 rounds with my guesthouse... I got totally spun out on uppers — I think it was coke and something else — and I was up for days on end. I started punching out different things in my guest house... I think I started with the TV and went over to the lamp, everything in the guest house got wrecked... I literally punched the TV."

Rob and Nick previously teamed up on *Being Charlie*, a 2015 semi-autobiographical drama that saw Nick open up about his battles with drug addiction and homelessness, which began in his teens.
During an appearance on NPR's *Fresh Air* podcast in September, the filmmaker, who was promoting *Spinal Tap II: The End Continues* at the time, revisited directing the film which Nick co-wrote. Rob compared his relationship with Nick to the father-son one depicted in the film, saying that unlike the dad onscreen, "I was never, ever too busy" for Nick.
"I mean, if anything, I was the other way, you know, I was more hands-on and trying to do whatever I thought I could do to help," he added. "I'm sure I made mistakes and, you know, I've talked about that with him since."
Later, Rob shared that he believed Nick was doing well, saying, "He's been great ... hasn't been doing drugs for over six years. He's in a really good place."**
