Star Wars' 2025 year in review, posted to starwars.com, provides a look back at the franchise's major milestones this year and highlights some of the most exciting Star Wars projects to come in 2026 and beyond.
Among the projects mentioned was Maul: Shadow Lord, a TV show focused on the one-time Sith Lord Darth Maul, who debuted in Star Wars: Episode I - The Phantom Menace. Although Maul seemed to die at the hands of Obi-Wan Kenobi in that movie, canon TV show Star Wars: The Clone Wars revealed that Maul had survived.
Maul has had several Star Wars returns since then, from another animated run in Star Wars Rebels to a second big screen appearance with his brief cameo in Solo: A Star Wars Story. Star Wars movies and TV shows aren't done with Maul yet, however, Star Wars Celebration Japan revealed that a brand-new Maul show is coming.
The show, titled Maul: Shadow Lord, is slated to release sometime in 2026, and Star Wars' end-of-year roundup included the official description: "Maul - Shadow Lord explores Maul’s quest for power in the gritty and merciless underworld following the aftermath of The Clone Wars and Order 66."
The period in which the show takes place is particularly notable because it's an era of Maul's timeline that remains largely a mystery, at least so far. At the end of The Clone Wars, Maul narrowly escaped death (once again) after he and Ahsoka Tano dueled and Order 66 was executed.
What came of Maul immediately after that event wasn't known, although his appearance in Rebels revealed that he'd lived to see another attempt at taking on a Sith apprentice before he—really, this time—died at the hands of Obi-Wan Kenobi.
Shadow Lord will therefore provide an interesting look at how Maul found his way in a galaxy without the Jedi and with the rise of an Imperial regime headed up by none other than his former Sith master, who had cast him aside.
Currently, the exact release date for Shadow Lord hasn't been announced, but this year-in-review post from Star Wars is a promising update and an exciting peek into what this brand-new Darth Maul show will entail.
